London Design Guide 2009

London Design Guide
Edited by Max Fraser

To coincide with London Design Week, Maz Fraser launched his new annual design guide with independent reviews of shops, galleries, and design institutions in and around London.

"Opened by Bennie Gray in 1976 on the site of the Edwardian department store Jordan's, Alfies has evolved into one of the city's leading destinations for antiques and 20th-century collectible furniture, lighting, ceramics, jewellery, art and clothing. With more than 75 dealers spread across 3,500-square-metres of space over five floors, it is also one of the country's vastest indoor antiques arcades. It is largely thanks to this emporium that the rather hotch-potch Church street is now lined with antiqe dealers.

There are several major retail spaces among the bric-a-brac. Unrivaled in Italian vintage lighting and interiors is Vincenzo Caffarella Gallery, which offers and extensive collection of mainly 1950s to 1970s Italian lighting, furniture, and art - including such beauties as a pair of 1960s Mazzega Murano glass chandeliers; a rare 1950s chromefloor lamp by Arredoluce; and a sculptural
L'Apoggio chair by Claudio Salocchi. In the basement, occupying more than 500-square-metres, Decoratum has tidy room sets arranged by style or era with an emphasis on designer pieces from the 1940s through the 1970s.

Decoratum's organised displays distinguish the dealer from the rest of Alfies, where many others cram as much as possible into their tiny warrens. Swirly carpets and fluorescent lighting prevail, thankfully stripping this place of unneccessary pretension. Don't let this deceive you: dealers can be shrewd and prices inflated. With such as huge selection, the enjoyment comes from hunting down a hidden treasure." London Design Guide, 2010.
